Photoshop Rant(angry)

Yea, right now I'm pretty pissed and need to blow off steam.

So the other day(yesterday really), I was at work. I work in the graphics department of a publishing company. Anyways, we have this new girl there who is 21 and has some degree in graphics of some sort I beleive. Anyways, the other day I was messing with Photoshop and she started asking me if I've ever used Adobe Illustrator. I told her I've heard of it but never used it.

To speed up the story she basically starts telling me that Illustrator was way better and such. The issue was something she said about text. She claimed that in photoshop a problem was when you create text it is raster and it loses quality when you try to resize it, but it is vector in illustrator and there is no quality lost when resizing.

Of course this is BS because when you make text in photoshop it is vector and you must convert it to raster if you want to use it as such a layer. You can resize text and change the font, etc. all in photoshop and it works just as if you were doing it in notepad, no quality loss.

She was just sitting there denying it all and ignoring me trying to show her and it pissed me off.

The real thing that bothers me most is how there are so many people out there like her who think that if you have a degree then you are special. She honestly doesn't know much about photoshop and so refuses to beleive anything other than what she picked up from college.

I do not have a degree but this shouldn't make my knowledge any less true. I know more than most kids will ever learn in 20 years of college. I just hate when people think that they are superior or know more b/c of a silly degree. I'm in college know for computer programming and I honestly have either a) not learned anything from the classes or b) not be taught anything useful.

Essentially in college you have your isntructor who will teach based a curiculum(sp?), but they will also give their opinions. And when you learn this way then it is hard to understand or listen to other things from the millions of other people in your field.

I just can't let it go how ignorant some people can be some times. I honestly had the impression she was someone who knew a bit about computers, but I now realize she is no different from the other standard users out there in the world. I honestly know 12 year olds that know more about computers....

But today I'm going to start going all geek ;) I will just mess with HTML, JS and PHP stuff(coding in notepad) in my spare time instead of photoshop. For some reason when you code in notepad it looks 1337

I've come across many of them. They think the degree they hold makes them superior over their juniors. When in fact we know better then them. Take for instance the seniors in my college. They act as if they know everything just because they are seniors when in fact they don't know half the things I know.

Its spelled as retarded and the last time I checked it was still the leading solution for graphics editing.

It currently has the most comprehensive set of plugins / brushes compared to any other solution out there albeit with a hefty price tag. GIMP is catching up, but its still not quite there yet.

Photoshop is the leading program in graphic design, no doubt. About 90% of the people I know use it. Text does not lose quality by resizing if you don't rasterize the layer. Regarding your last comment, Notepad++ is even more 1337 than Notepad. :p I use it all the time, and it's awesome.

if this is a publishing company, illustrator is your basis. Vector is resolution independent. That is what the press needs. Vector is also good for the web, when you can watch a vector flash movie full screen without loosing quality.

Notepad is l33t because you don't need syntax highlighting for great code.

Whether or not your using Photoshop, Illustrator, or any software in the world that renders text (correctly), such as Microsoft Word, the quality of font will remain the same, as long as the font is True Type. True Type fonts are made from vector images; hence they can be resized to any dimension without losing any quality.

Next time you see her, ask her if see knows what a .ttf file is.

Actually, we use InDesign. And we have photoshop mainly for touching up images and logos, etc.

But the whole thing was that Photoshop can indeed create vector text that can be converted into raster. Maybe she just used an old version or something... I dunno.

But yea, funny thing, I was still screwing around in Photoshop(yea, I do that during work...), and I pulled up an old image I made(underwater scene created with filters and lighting effects(burn, dodge)). Well she saw it and was shocked that I made it and so then her and our other 'graphics' guy were sitting there asking me about it and were amazed that I could make something that good(b/c they couldn't). It was great. Priceless.

But yea, what's up with Macs and editing HTML? I can edit .html and .js and .css all in Notepad on a PC, but with Macs there is just TextEdit, and it won't let me save anything other than .rtf
I can use it to open a .js and .css file now and just save that, but if I open the .html document, ehhh.... not sure how to explain it but that just doesn't work. Ehhh... oh well, I think they are going to bring me a PC soon.

Nice =) It's good that you can impress your work people with what you do on your free time. Maybe they can HIRE you to screw around with Photoshop and come up with logos!
