phpBB3 email error

I set up a phpBB3 board. When setting up the email settings in the ACP, I set up as follows:
SMTP is on.
SMTP server is xo4.x10hosting.com
Port is 465
Authentication method is currently Plain, but has also been set to all the other options during testing.
SMTP Username and Password are as detailed in the X10 Hosting CP's section on the email address the system is set to (noreply@<domain>.cu.cc).

when I attempt to trigger an email, an error pops up in the phpBB3 error log:
E-mail error
» EMAIL/SMTP
/forums/cron.php

Could not get mail server response codes
Backtrace
Connecting to xo4.x10hosting.com:465

I am currently on free hosting, and have tried the solutions I found in previous threads on the subject on these forums.

Does anyone have any ideas?

http://status.x10hosting.com/ indicates there is an issue with sending e-mail via x10hosting free accounts since Saturday.
