PHPMailer sendmail error

Greetings,

I'm trying to set up my site to send mails via the PHPMailer class that wraps the sendmail function available.

When the script tries to excecute /usr/sbin/sendmail, I get a "Could not execute error".
Has anyone experienced the same problem?

What could be wrong?

I'm not 100% sure but that class may be disabled because a lot of people were sending spam out that way. You could try using the mail(); function instead.

Would connecting to an external server via SMTP work?

I've never tried that before but I see no reason for it not to work.
