I have something pointless to do with my computer

Hooking up LED's to my USB port

Step1: Get 1 LED or light

Step 2: Get one USB port that is attached to a computer that is in the ON state (make sure the computer is on)

Step 3: Look at USB port the wiring config is shown below
USB_Type_A_Connector.gif

#1 is 5v+ and # 4 is -

Step 4: Take the 2 wires form the LED and make contact with points #1 and 4

and there you go

Anyone else have pointless things to do with your computer???

A pointless thing?

1: Download random things you won't use :p
2: Draw random things in Paint/Photoshop/GIMP/Paint.net, etc...

Turn an old computer case into a box for just about anything or use a hard drive platter as a portable mirror. There's a lot of random things you can do with a computer...

A few weeks ago one of my friends working on an engineering degree got his hands on a light mixer program and decided to adapt twinkling christmas lights to his serial port and write a plugin for the program to communicate to them. He had them lighting, dimming and twinkling on command from his comp. That was pretty funny, pointless though since I did the same thing with a set of store bought lights that come with a little box for that. :p

'Ey hey hey hey hey.

It's good for downloading Firefox to replace it at the very least. Handy cause it seems the fox is the one thing that never makes it into my backup discs -_-'

also, look for aliens in seti@home website! by downloading their "ratio spectre verification software, wich they nicely embedded as a screensaver, ideal for those ppl that leaves the pc undernight or 24 hours turned on, :p

also you could look for another program with the same basis, but it actually its about cancer research, wich i dont find at all useless, just in case the cure is found, but its still nice to see the graphics tho..

here are the links

Cutting out a square of old motherboard, melting off surplus components, drilling small hole and making square into cool keyring! Well whenever I get my keys out, people have to look at it...

Also, interfacing two robot arms (we had at school for some reason) to a serial port, writing programs to make them do funky dances, sort blocks, and pour 'dangerous' liquids as part of a demo.
