Preventing hot linking of images?

Hi,
I want to prevent this from happening so when I googled about this I got to this article:

It says mod_rewrite must be enabled to make this work.
So please tell me if it's enabled on the server or there's any other way also to do this.

mod_rewrite is enabled.

cPanel has a feature [ Security --> HotLink Protection ] to do it automatically by extension (ie all .gif .jpg files ). It works via the .htaccess file which you can examine after using it to see how it is done.
