[font=verdana, arial, helvetica]Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) unveiled some additional details about the PlayStation 3 (PS3) console at a recent presentation in Tokyo, Japan. Apparently, the company wants its console to remain on the market for a decade, even being expensive initially. Meanwhile, the company is struggling to deliver enough development kits for game makers, whereas its technology partners NVIDIA and Transmeta are yet to deliver tools that would help developers to leverage the power of PS3s hardware.

PlayStation 3 Will Be Expensive SCEI Chief

Were looking at a life cycle of 10 years with the PlayStation 3. Were currently shifting from standard TVs to HDTVs, but in the next couple of years, most flat-panel TVs will be full HD. Were releasing the PS3 with full HD features from the start so that consumers wont have to buy another version of the console in the future. For the same reason, were using Blu-ray as the PS3s disc format, Ken Kuratagi, SCEI president is reported to have said, claims GameSpot.

Sony Computer Entertainment chief admitted that initially the price of the console is going to be high because of rather expensive components its uses, but he claimed that those, who want, would buy the gaming machine and that high price is justified by long life-cycle.

Im aware that with all these technologies, the PS3 cant be offered at a price thats targeted towards households. I think everyone can still buy it if they wanted to, Mr. Kuratagi said.

Merrill Lynch Japan estimates that the machines main components namely its Cell chip, NVIDIA RSX graphics processor and BD-ROM drive will cost about $101 each. After adding the other electronics that will be used in the PlayStation 3, the machines production cost goes up to around $500. Merrill Lynch believed that Sony would offer its PS3 at a discount price and may lose billions of dollars on that.

Im not going to reveal its price today. Im going to only say that itll be expensive, the SCEI chief added.

Development Tools In Development

Sony still does not have final hardware of its console and game developers use preliminary kits, which are of a size of a typical computer and which feature Cell processor running at 2.40GHz. However, even such systems are in shortage. To date, only 450 PS3 development kits have been supplied worldwide. Sony intends to release an additional 200 units in August and 300 more in September, but most developers probably will have to wait until October, when the company ramps up its production to 3000 units per month.

Sony has already inked agreements with AGEIA and Havok acquiring license to use their physics technologies, now the company waits for NVIDIA Corp. and Transmeta to create tools that would ease development process for the RSX graphics processor and Cell central processor. In particular, NVIDIA is expected to provide a lineup of programmable shader tools for the console, including a compiler; Transmeta is set to develop synergistic processing unit (SPE) optimizer and software that will let developers effectively program for the Cell processor and its seven SPEs.

It is yet unclear when the final set of hardware and software for developers emerges.

Only computers get better over time, not technology for television only.

10 years? are they serious?
i really doubt blu-ray will ever work out
everyone is not going to pay thousands of dollars to replace their existing burners and get new cds

and if you ask me, cds arent the future
the future will run on vinyls (remember those records your grandparents have?) in a copy of scientific american, many scientists say that a simple addition to existing technology can be used for vinyls

vinyls can store more, they last longer, and it is harder to damage data when scratched

if your gonna get the ultimate games machine thats upgradable,

Alienware is the only way to go.

Then you can play BF2 with overclocked Gfx and you will be able to upgrade without gettin a whole new machine.

Yeah let's all get an Alienware PC, because we all have 2/3+ grand lying around for it. The PS3 will have Linux pre-installed on it's optional HDD, which will turn it into a fullyfledged PC. Also, the PS3's graphics will be more powerful than any graphics card on the market for the pc right now. That's a fact. I will definately be getting one, although I will wait for a while after it's release because it's going to be pricey. I might get an XBox 360 as well, but it depends on how much they cost. My PSP will do for now.

wow... i wish it wasn't so esxpensive, because for one I can't buy one, lol. I think to, that if the public can't afford it in general, it won't do as well. Because even though it's expensive, and they get more profit per one, not as many people are going to/ or be able to buy them, and I doubt it can stay around for 10 years, because cd's aren't the future. snes was released here in 1991 (america). now here's the graphics for the snes http://criticall.gameplanet.cz/criticall/image/cr8/snes.jpg And I know graphics aren't going to improve this much, but ps2 was released in 2002 or something, thats 11 years difference, a little more than 10, now, I know you all know ps2 graphics, but still here they are: http://www.armchairempire.com/image...2/metal-gear-solid-2/metal-gear-solid-2-1.jpg just compare...

I'd love to get one. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll have enough money to buy it when it comes out . =/

lol, its going to be 649-900 dollars, the whole thing costs 550 dollars to make the first year of production, then after that it will only costs them 300, then only 175, then soon like 50, but the ps3 is going to be way better than a computer, and who needs an alienware? i got an hp with 1 gig of ram, 200 gig harddrive, 3700+ AMD Athlon processor, but with a stinky graphics card: ATI Radeon Xpress 200 graphics (512 MB of vram) for only 799 after rebates
my old computer has a better graphics card though, 512 nVidia OC, but i use that and other 3 for LAN parties
