I have a few questions about the DNS:
- is it possible to use a catchall domain (like *.mydomain.tld) on a free host.
- is it possible to redirect a subdomain using a NS record?

You can't use a catchall for free hosting. You can change domain records via DNS editor in cpanel, which is also useful for stuff like google apps.
