Use cPanel --> File Manager or FTP to go to the directory above public_html
Write down the permission for public_html (probably 0750)
Change the permissions to 0777 (everything for everybody)
Go into public_html and delete the files/directories you want deleted.
Go back up one level and restore the permissions on public_html.

Thank you - I did that and deleted the contents of the public folder.
I then tried to install Joomla 1.5 with Fantastico and am getting the following error:
Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, no-reply@x10hosting.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
