rewrite mod isnt working

i am trying to get rewrite mod to work and it isnt working properly.

RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*).php$ home.php?pages=$1 [L]

nvm had to replace it with

RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)/$ index.php?route=$1 [L]

I get a 404 Not Found response
