Why is it that so few people bother to use Search?

Here's my reason: It's too much of a pain in the a** to find what you're looking for! You mostly find TONS of outdated posts, or old irrelivent threads. OR you find EXACTLY what you're looking for! and it either NEVER got answered, or was instucted to "search the forums first"

Not many are "search" gurus, and if the search involves more than just dropping in the (assumed) relivent words and search... forget it! I won't and neither will anyone else. I come to the forums to find ANSWERS, NOT more of the same unanswered questions.

Sorry if that seems sharp, but it's the truth.

search for "My mail program won't work anymore" and when you get your results, you'll SEE why most don't try again. They search for answers.... not unanswered questions...

I do agree that something needs to be done to improve member's access to important info & news.

Here's my most recent xrantx post on the subject ; http://forums.x10hosting.com/off-to...ble-post-announcements-thread.html#post548067. Did you contribute? I'd like to see something get implemented, but I bet it doesn't!

....

Well duh! Search here isn't a speech recognition program, or a Google, which has many billions of entries to search through. If you tried to search something sensible, like the keyword in the first post of this thread ie. mail(), then you get plenty of posts which immediately answer that question ;

http://forums.x10hosting.com/free-hosting/98483-php-mail.html

http://forums.x10hosting.com/free-hosting/98531-smtp-mail.html

http://forums.x10hosting.com/free-hosting/98523-phpmailer-problem.html ........and so on. Conclusion: "mail() and fsockopen() will not work until further notice. This is known by the staff. You should not submit tickets for problems with mail() and fsockopen() or request to have your PHP version changed."

So, Search was easy, wasn't it?! Some people just can't be helped. Some people can't even help themselves.

And yes, sometimes the only solution to a problem is to wait until other people are ready & able to fix it for you. Get used to it. Get over it!

Edit : Added

Hi.
For those people still having problems, please make sure you have read this; http://forums.x10hosting.com/news-announcements/98555-latest-updates-6-14-09-a.html#post549837

OK - I've just logged on after a while and checked the account registrations on my site (Cossacks).

None of them are validating due to mail() issues.

I have done a search and followed the links provided but none seem to answer the question definitively.

All I get is a buch of info on Server upgrades and losing files and mail will be re-instated "shortly"...

When is the mail() function back up as this is critical to my sites performance?

Rich

PS - stupid question, but what is the need for almost constant server upgrades and related "teething problems??"

The question was answered in Corey's post : some PHP & that function are disabled until the server upgrade is complete & everything is fixed. No date known, so I'm afraid you'll just need to wait.

The reason for the upgrades was given here ; http://forums.x10hosting.com/news-a...-give-up-cpanel-better-uptime.html#post543433 :)

Hmm.. I knew they were disabled... just didn't know when they were back up so in fairness, this isn't an answer to my question ;)

Thanks for the link to the reasoning - I have to admit that removal or minimising of the cpanel (which I know is irrelevant now) would be a good trade for improved uptime, although my site on Cossacks seem to enjoy 96.5 to 97% uptime anyway!

Lets just hope I don't lose too many potential users!! lol.

Hey - it's free - I'm grateful it's there at all!

BTW, in response to one of the posts above, I have to admit that using search functions in vbulletin (or phpBB for that matter) is not the easiest of tasks. I understand that the right keywords will return the right answer....somewhere... but isn't this what forums are about??

Surely the interaction with the user base, despite repetition, (which must annoy moderators) is a key way to keep content fresh?

Only my opinion so please don't jump down my throat!

I agree. Fresh content is good, as long as it isn't a constant repetition of the same few problems over & over.

It's good to know that people have at least tried to first help themselves by looking for answers. :)

It seems everyone is having a bad week answering repetitive threads. I suggest people don't show it in their posts too much for the people who don't read the forums very often because they would just think your a .... No one wants to have their questions answered with a method of answering it, so please say it nicely when necessary. There are often hidden motives for the questions.

Yes. This thread does show I had lost patience a bit on that day! But you should realise that with nchgaming, for example, he was actually ranting angrily at me in more than one thread at the same time.

I've already answered a few hundred questions this week, all to the basic & easily solved problems caused by this whole server transfer business. Most of my posts elsewhere hopefully aren't like the ones earlier in this thread.

But if one has already seen or answered a very similar question many times previously that same day, what do you expect?

Sometimes it's better to encourage & show a person once how to help themself, than to keep spoon-feeding them over & over & over & over & .............

As for what people think of me........Pah! Who cares?!! I try to help them. For free. :)

Hey, I really appreciate your comments and fully understand your position as moderation can be a tedious and, at times, thankless task.

I raise my cap to anyone who has the commitment to answer any questions, let alone thousands!!

I throw my cap in the air, to all those who, during server moves, reply endlessly to all those users who don't know what search is, where it is and what is it for, to all those user who don't take the time to get informed of what is going on, and to what is happening, that just get angry and that just start saying that this is bad.
