Phpbb3 is supposedly easier to use and has a better admin section so if you are new to making a website then you should probably go with phpbb3, but otherwise I would recommend SMF, because I like SMF, its easy to use, has loads of great mods (have a look at this one ), and despite the fact that it has less admin functionality, it is still very good, and the code is actually relatively easy to muck around with and change if you have some knowledge of php.

I like SMF much more than phpbb. I have tried both, and I find SMF much easier to use, it has better mods, and the deafult and other layouts look much better.

I like phpBB, but I haven't used SMF.
I have a question for you SMF users, to install MODs, do you still have to edit a bazillion files?

do you still have to edit a bazillion files?

I have been installing and creating Mods for SMF and I have never heard of that type of file. To install a mod for SMF, you goto admin -> packages. Then download and install the Mod, it is extremely easy to do.

DeadBattery means, do you have to edit millions of files? Not do you have to edit a file called 'bazillion'.

In phpBB lots of the MODs require you to edit files, which is annoying. Luckily most of the MODs come with detailed instructions.

Sorry I misunderstood it, soo tired. Anyway SMF doesn't need any manual file changing if the mod has been made correctly and you are using the correct version.

I like PhpBB.
I've never used SMF, but a lot of people think it's better.

I prefer SMF due to the fact that installing mods is a lot easier, plus SMF supported mods from the beginning. With phpBB you had to have some custom version (CF.2.1.xxxxxx whatever) until phpBB3.

I also like the look and feel of SMF.

But vBulletin owns all with customization.

Having used both, I would absolutely say phpBB. It's ease of use, friendly community, and many mods make it the perfect choice.

I have liked and always used phpbb, its just so nice and easy to use.
Although I have never used many of these others you are talking about, the main ones I know are phpbb and .... oh god, I have forgotten what the other one is called XD, seriously if I heard what it was called, I would know it, but I can't remember right now! XD

But yeah, phpbb for the WIN!
