SMTP & mail() function not working for Joomla installation

Hi, I am using SMTP server in a joomla installation and even though it works in localhost, I get an error "SMTP Error! Could not connect to SMTP host." when using it online. I am using an email hosted outside of x10hosting. I tried using the mail() function as well, but it seems not to be activated, so there is no way to use email and user registration on my site. Email are not send. Could you, please, tell me what's wrong? Thank you.

I have also search the forums, of course, but couldn't find an answer.

Thank you for your quick answer. What about smtp server not hosted in your server? It doesn't involve mail() function and it should normally work...

yes SMTP should work
