SMTP Problems (Can't send mail.)

I'm unable to send mail out through the smtp server. I've configured my mail client according to the instructions in cPanel. I'm using my own domain name (nmacon.net) I would like to have email working as soon as possible. Can anybody help me with this problem?

I get a message that says "unknown error." Not exactly helpful.

Are you using SSL?
What are you using for username?
And what are you using as the server?

I'm not using SSL.

The Username is colin+nmacon.net

The server is mail.nmacon.net

Try using mail.stoli.x10hosting.com as the server.

That doesn't work either.
