This thread is useful as a long-term reference if people list the free tracker/ counter/ statistics/ analytics tools that they recommend.

As has been mentioned, Google Analytics is very popular, & one of the biggest & best. Does anyone know of any reasons why not everyone would choose to use it? What about privacy issues, or perhaps the script isn't suitable for some websites? Any thoughts on this?

StatCounter has already been mentioned.

Here are some others I have booked marked over the years ;

http://extremetracking.com [seems a bit old now]
http://gostats.com [seems good]
http://www.sitemeter.com

http://piwik.org [open source, PHP software to install]
http://www.quest.com/funnel-web-analyzer [software to install]

I haven't tested them out much.
Does anyone have any experience of them or other recommendations of their own? :)

no awstats? well that sucks!

thing is I know about google analytics and other counters and thats good...but it doesn't work at all with flash.. and my site is flash heavy so a lot of the stats don't get counted bcuz the flash object is pulling its own files images etc off the server..

so I need a way of getting the raw log files into a a proper setup like awstats... so is there software that can easily read the raw logs?????

Good stuff zen-r, I've been meaning to look in to this, so you've saved me a bit of research - thank you.

I'm aware this is the market-leader, but I've been slightly cautious about automatically choosing this option as visitors to your site are easily able to turn it off, either by not accepting first-party cookies, or not having JavaScript enabled (both true, in my case). To me, this means the results are always incorrect.

In my mind, I would prefer this task to be performed server-side, where I think more accurate results would be produced. Therefore, I'll be looking into the php solutions from your list. I'm inexperienced in this field, so I'm happy to change my mind; why should I choose Google Analytics?

yeah I dumped google analytics for statcounter.. tbh analytics is overated and larger .js download it also takes out ip info boo...

so anyway off to look for another free host that supports awstats or at least something better than nothing.. I also agree its much better just to get stats server side.. less downloading and javascript processing for visitors of the site.. its just annoying and you can also gets stats from flash objects without having to fag about with ridiculous actionscript coding and extra bloat.

its a shame nothing can really be done with the raw access logs.. like feeding them into some software that can present the data in an awstats type way... i'd settle for that

I'd be interested to hear feedback from anyone who gives server-side software like http://piwik.org/ a try.

With Piwik, it seems to have some of the advantages of being server-side, but also relies on adding a script to websites - which would seem to introduce the disadvantage again of not tracking people who don't have JavaScript enabled.

I note that on their website, they make this feature out to be an advantage;

* Tracking Method: Piwik is using a javascript based tracker, and keeps count of unique visitors with a tracking cookie. Logs analyzers softwares (AWStats, Webalizer, Analog, etc.) or custom server-side script would record all traffic including bots and generally rely on the IP address and user agent to determine unique visitors, which is less accurate.

* Record loaded page: when the Piwik javascript code is located at the end of the page, Piwik will only record page views for page that are finished loading. Log Analyzers would also record page requests that have been "cancelled", eg. when the user hits the Back button before the page is displayed.

* Visitors Browser: Piwik will count visitors with Javascript and Images enabled. Other softwares may record visits from visitors with Javascript disabled, which would include non human activity like search engine bots.

It also mentions here that the Piwik tracking code has a NoScript which could be used to record visits from people without Javascript enabled.

So it may still be worthy of investigation. Post back here if you've tried it (or similar software) & reach any conclusions! :)
