This will be my fourth attempt at getting somewhere after receiving no response whatsoever the three other times.

I had a few directories that were password protected that functioned correctly on Boru.

After the move to Level, password recognition failed to recognize correct username and passwords.

I have:
reset any and all passwords
removed and replaced the password protection
checked that files and folders are 644 and 755 respectively
checked around for any answers as to how to fix this without finding anything

So.

Can I get any suggestions at all?

Have you checked the permissions on
/home/aotaelem/.htpasswds
and on /home/aotaelem/.htpasswds/public_html
and on /home/aotaelem/.htpasswds/public_html/my_password_protected_directory
and on /home/aotaelem/.htpasswds/public_html/my_password_protected_directory/passwd ??

Be sure Prems (permissions) for folder [ .htpasswds ] are 0755 and NOT 0750

You can see (and change) Prems in cPanel's [ File Manager ]

Be sure to check [ Show Hidden Files... ] before you start [ File Manager ]

When in [ File Manager ] click on [ /home/... ] top left side

You will see Prems down the far right hand side

Click on the 'folder' icon for file [ .htpasswds ]

At the top of page click on [ Change Permissions ]

+++++++++++++++++++++

A error I made at first was -- it is two steps
1st set and save the password
2nd set the user and save it

1st time or two I did not save the user
