I use stand by for when being away for a short amount of time. Or when I am USB charging my phone or mp3 player.

I use hibernate when being away for a long time OR when I am moving between network connections. I noticed that many applications and sometimes Windows itself crash and burns if I stand by and move to a different network.

On my laptop, I just suspend it when I'm going to be away for any reasonable period of time. Suspended it uses about 2w, and I'd rather have what is practically an instant-on than save the extra 2w. On my desktop, I usually just shut it down if I'm not going to use it, it has issues with hibernation sometimes & suspending it still uses a significant amount of power
