If it's always the incorrect time and date, your CMOS battery may be dead. It's the small button battery on the motherboard, typically a CR2032 battery. Just replace it and things should be all set then.

as Smith6612 said, there should be a battery on your motherboard. It looks like a watch battery, but it's larger and a bit thinner. If the power of the battery is empty, your motherboard will not be able to count the time while the power is off.

There is a typo in the above. The battery number would normally be CR2032, not CR2302. Just thought I would point it out.

My bad. I should have mentioned to check the motherboard to see what it takes. I may just point out that my retired gaming PC built 6 years ago had the CMOS battery die on it last year. For the most part, the machine only lost the time when the system was without power for more than 15 minutes (when ALL of the capacitors on the board ran out of juice), but when the system was plugged in the power supply's nominal amount of power would keep the time and date in the CMOS. Now, my 11 year old laptop which is getting replaced in the next few weeks just had it's CMOS battery die last month. The system battery does in fact keep the time, but when it dies (usually under a few days), the clock will be off by a month or so.

i wonder if your timezone is incorrect and thus time-update is resetting it.

It's probably a timezone problem. Even if the battery is dead, the computer will keep the clock working using standby power until it's unplugged.

Windows resets to atomic time at the timezone you have set while installing when it's restarted.

out of curiosity, how long does the CMOS battery in the motherboard last?
Thanks!

It will last many years without power, and with computers using ATX power supplies, even longer as the battery is only used when there's a power outage. Old batteries sometimes die when the computer is left disconnected for 1-2 weeks That happens when the battery was manufactured many years ago.
