Time for site creation?

How long does it usually take for a hosting account to be created?

Depends.
You should of received an e-mail that gave an estimated time on when your account would be created.

A message popped up saying I had to re-register my domain. I did so and the hosting account got created immediately. Weird.

Edit:
Okay, I made a domain name separate from x10hosting.com (ie http://site.com/ rather than http://site.x10hosting.com/). The control panel says it's done, but I when I try to access it pops up with an "address not found" message.

Do I have to buy the domain?

go to co.cc free domains

in essence, not only does x10 have to know where your site is, the rest of the world does too, so you have to register it. co.cc has detailed instructions and it's very easy.

If I already have a .com domain, how do I link it to my x10 website?

go to the registrar and tell them the dns information for x10
