When I try to get into cpanel I get a browser message that the site I'm trying to connect to is unsafe. Says something about a self signed security certificate. It never used to do this, is there something wrong?

Hello, there is nothing wrong. This is perfectly safe. It just means the SSL certificate has been signed by itself rather than a registered company that signs them such as verisign and the likes.
