Unable to use FTP - DirectAdmin password different from my normal password?

I haven't used it in ages, and now am terrified of getting locked out yet again.

To change it I need a 'DirectAdmin password', which is not any password I use to log into this account. What is DirectAdmin?

Can the password be reset?

DirectAdmin is the hosting control panel. When you log into the account panel at https://x10hosting.com/panel you should see your service details listed.

You should also see 3 buttons, change password, hosting control panel, and upgrades. Clicking the change password button there will take you through the process of changing the DirectAdmin password, which in turn will also change the password for the default email account, and FTP

When I tried that, it outlined the old and the new passwords in red and showed an incorrect password message. I was to scared to try again as I don't want to be locked out.

Can you attach a screenshot of what you are showing. The change password process in the panel does not ask for the current password, do not click hosting control panel. Only new password and confirm new password and looks like this:
