The stealth genre while pretty popular back in the day hasn’t received much love in recent times except for Metal Gear Solid 4. The Splinter Cell series has seen a change in direction with Sam Fisher, hunted as a fugitive (and even then there’s no word on his latest game, Conviction). There’s no new Hitman, Manhunt (sob) or NOLF (No One Lives Forever) game on the horizon and even though there are rumors of Thief 4 circulating the net, there’s no concrete information at hand.
In such bleak times we must pray for the resurrection of our beloved franchises and maybe take solace in the fact that there are a few games releasing this year that could very well kick start this dying genre once again.
Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Dark Athena (Xbox360 PS3 PC)
What’s it about: The most badass mofo in the entire galaxy finds himself trapped on a hostile ship called Dark Athena where he has to pretty much kill anything that walks... or moves for that matter.
Why it’s gonna rock: For starters the game is going to ship with an updated, graphically polished version of the game that started it all, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. After that we have a brand new single player campaign as well as new multiplayer modes. Can you say bang for your buck?
Batman: Arkham Asylum</STRONG> (Xbox360 PS3 PC)
What’s it about: The silent predator AKA The Bat, finds himself trapped in Arkham Asylum while his arc nemesis, The Joker and the rest of the deranged inmates give him one hell of a welcoming partee.
Why it’s gonna rock: Unlike the crapfest that was Batman Begins, Arkham Asylum will actually allow you to play the game the way you feel like instead of holding your pinky finger and leading you through the entire game. Plus you’ll have tons of snazzy gadgets at your disposal with which you can silence the dangerous inmates of Arkham Asylum. Think Splinter Cell meets Manhunt only in a very T rated way.
Saboteur (Xbox360 PS3 PC)
What’s it about: You’re a happy go lucky Irish fella in Paris minding your own business till your friends get killed by ze angsty Nazis. This of course pushes you over the edge and you begin a revolution of sorts to eradicate Nazi presence from Paris once and for all. Viva La Revolution!
Why it’s gonna rock: Unlike conventional stealth games, Saboteur will actually denote areas of oppression in a sepia tone of sorts and only once you liberate it, will color be restored to that particular area. People in liberated areas will be happier and of course, more helpful as well. Think Sam Fisher meets the prince of persia(the latest one).
Velvet Assassin (Xbox360 PC)
What’s it about: Based on the true story of World War II spy, Violette Szabo Velvet Assassin will put players into the sneaky boots of Violette Summer as she heads behind enemy lines to dismantle the "Nazi Warmachine".
Why it’s gonna rock: Since this is being developed by a small time developer I really don’t know if it’s gonna rock but it sounds promising playing out like a conventional stealth game where you’ll be hiding in shadows and brutally taking enemies down be it by stabbing them in the skull, back, chest or private parts (ouch).
Cipher Complex (Xbox360 PS3 PC)
What’s it about: Step into the boots of John Sullivan, a super agent who travels the world preventing the illegal buying and selling of nuclear weapons. On one of these missions he dies (no spoiler here), gets resurrected via an experiment only to become deadlier and faster than he was.
Why it’s gonna rock: With Cipher Complex, developer Edge of Reality plans on re-inventing the genre by allowing us to control a protagonist who moves more like a Ninja than a conventional, slow moving stealth game protagonist. They claim Sullivan will be able to clean an entire room using his knife even before the first body hits the floor. Impressive yes?
