Upgrade from free to premium?

Well, I went to 1and1 for oh... a couple days and had a heck of a time setting up my website that's functional on x10's free hosting. They had PHP4 defaulted, so had to edit .htaccess files to use PHP5, of course those don't help cron jobs run PHP5. I went through their tech support and that was a fiasco. Then, I went to rackspace and tried my luck at an unmanaged cloud server. That lasted 2 hours.

Now I'm back here, because I know my site works here. Question is, if I pay, do you think I'll see a speed increase?

Also, I can't find it, does X10 offer SSH?

You'll likely see a speed increase since paid hosting is on different servers, so there aren't thousands of people competing for limited server resources. Also, all paid hosting plans feature SSH, you just need to submit a support ticket to enable it.
