RAM looks to be the way to go. Maybe to 4gig, I dunno how much that will cost, though.

4GB worth of RAM would be worthless if the topic poster is not running a 64-bit operating system. 3GB would be the absolute max I'd say to go.

I think upgrading the graphics would be the way to go if your mobo can support it. An 8500GT is a decent card, but all because it has 1.2 GB of onboard RAM doesn't make it a good card. $200 could get you cards that used to cost $500 a couple years ago

Just beware if you plan on getting a new graphics card you might have to get a new power supply too (I got a 650W Corsair with 52A on a single 12V rail for $60 after rebates)

I think the 8500GT has only 256MB of dedicated video memory, and the rest of the video memory is system RAM.

I don't know much about hardware for Windows, at the moment I have a Macbook Black with 2.4Ghz and 2GB RAM, works amazingly.

Hardware on a PC is the same as Hardware on a Mac. It's a fast processor a slow processor, dual core or quad core, slow RAM or Fast RAM, lots of RAM or very little RAM. On-board video/sound or PCI-E video and sound, etc.

Ah yes that would make much more sense now that I'm reading it

However I have seen rather low end cards with absurdly high amounts of onboard RAM.

Anyway, I would still suggest buying a new graphics card (and new power supply if more power is required)

I'm sorry you did that without my input. 2GB of RAM was probably plenty, for what I'm assuming was a WinXP machine because it's 32b. (Not knocking it, that's what I'm running and I have 4GB of RAM).

As others said XP 32b will only recognize 3.5GB of it, so the 4 isn't worth it, but I plan to upgrade to Vista/Windows7, which is 64b.

If I had the opportunity to answer your question I would have asked about your Harddisk situation. Many people overlook this and it's where your computer can load and open programs a lot faster. If you haven't already done so, buy another HD and set it up in Raid0. You will notice a big difference. If you could get two 10,000 RPM HDs in Raid0, you'll be satisfied. Otherwise save your money and wait for SSDs to drop in price.

That being said. You will probably need to upgrade your Power Supply in the near future, depending on your case fans and how many input devices you have hooked up. For right now 350-400W should suit you plenty, as long as it has enough amerage along the different rails (3/5/12 V). Though, having a good 600W is probably good to play it safe.

Goodluck to you.
