Although this thread is principally target at more senior users (lieutenant and up, staff), anyone can participate.

Have you noticed that recently, the number of spam messages has gone up? I myself, who had used the report button once before recently, used it three times in the past hours. I don't know if that is seasonal or it's a result from the changes in the x10 way of doing things, but I'd like to get your opinion on that.

EDIT:

make that 4.

I usually don't report posts unless they're breaking severe rules, like saying words considered highly offensive and passing the filter by adding spaces between the letters; advertising websites that are considered unethical, immoral, or phishing; or copy and paste spamming advertisements in random threads.

Most of the time, if people spam in the News & Announcements board, I just send them a private message or leave them a visitor message telling them that spamming or posting irrelevant things in random threads is looked down upon, and should be stopped.

And I haven't noticed a spike in the number of reportable posts. Maybe my interpretation of reportable is different than yours.

I've never had to use the report button on this forum here (because I only stop by for a few minutes each week).

But when I use the report button, I do to alert the mod squad about flaming/trolling mostly. Mainly since a lot of the forum I am on I don't see spamming, but just plain disrespect towards other members (which is the rule on most of the forums I head to).

I've also noticed that the Mods act a bit more "harshly" to a reported post, rather then something they found while browsing a topic. Then again, it might be that the particular forum I am thinking of is kinda dead and some of the mods are looking to be put to use.

I've only ever seen a couple spam posts on this forum, mostly from clicking the "I can get you banned" link in ichwar's sig :)

I've never used a report button anywhere, except on my own forum to test it.

I've had it used on me though, ages ago.

lol, that's an outdated joke between zen-r and I. I think I'll remove it since he's nolonger active. :)

To the subject on had, I use the report button mainly to report posts that are advertising a certain site, or have absolutely nothing to do with anything, or that are offensive/innapropriate in one way or another.

I used it recently on a user that posted a thread in this category with the s**t word in spanish. I haven't seen those type of post before. However, I might add that it was usually Zen-r that reported the posts, so now that he's not around...

I think you have placed your finger on the problem. I have noticed an increase of spammy posts.

Ya... I think Corey should update the regex for the spam word list, to cope with Zen-r's inactivity... here is one (must be in case-insensitivity mode):
Code:
\s*s+\s*h+\s*i+\s*t+\s*

As long as it doesn't turn into Neopets. :) You can't even post a link to a .org site without the filter catching it. Though it makes sense to have a very aggressive filter over there.

Ah, the days of discovering the internet and html. :)

Where did Zen-r actually go?

I went away for a couple of months and have only recently come back, so I'm a bit out of touch.

Anyway back on topic.

To be honest, I couldn't care less about swearing. It doesn't mean anything any more, it's just a way of getting your 900 word essay to 1000. Okay, maybe not...

I personally don't understand why people swear. Yet I still swear. I don't know why, and I'm not going to try and think of an explanation.

Although I'm quite relaxed. I also don't mind minor racism. I'm not going to give an example, because I don't want to get reported, but I have a friend (who is black) who is often racist to me and I am racist to him. Not in a mean way, just stereotyping.

When we've done with in front of people in the past some people have been quite shocked, yet others have also seen the funny side.

What I can't understand is people being racist to groups of people, or people they don't know or dislike, or swearing for the sake of it.

Sometimes it is also quite difficult to tell whether someone is being harsh or joking though. I would probably just leave it to the person being insulted (or not) to report the post.

So I would think for quite a bit before reporting a post. Although knowing the moderators round here it would be weeks before they actually did anything about it anyway :)

EDIT: Wow, I have only just noticed how long this post is :)

Yea, I noticed that the last time I was on Neopets. They disable a lot of style keywords too, because there are some scammers that place a floating image of a really expensive item over a really cheap item and sell that in their shop. Basically, it looks like someone is getting a really good deal, but in reality, they're paying a ridiculously high price for something like a dead fish or whatnot.

I'm more puzzled than you. I emailed him a couple of days ago but never got any reply.

I'm just about ready to call him. ;) Lol, just joking.
