My friend and I are making movies for our website on x10hosting. I like to use copyrighted music in movies we make, but some people have told me that only a 30-second clip of a copyrighted song is legal to use in any form. Do you guys know if the 30-second rule applies when the songs are being used for homemade movies? I can't seem to get a sure answer.

Well, the movie has to contain something then just music though. As background music it's fine with me. (Not sure what Corey will say)

It applies to all movies. At the middle school (7th, 8th) grade where I live they do a video news show and they had to use 30 seconds clip.

Each country has different copyright laws, so you will have to check your local library or do a legal search on the Web. Basically, though...the 30 second rule seems to be common throughout the Western worlds laws. Otherwise, you need the owners permission.
