Virtual Folders with mod_rewrite

As the title says, can virtual folders be done here, I know of a few places where I wouldn't be able to.

Is mod_rewrite enabled in the first place? I can't seem to get any of the ones I try to work.

Mod_rewrite should be enabled, I've never seen it disabled.

Make sure you include a "RewriteEngine on" directive in your .htaccess file before any other mod_rewrite directives.

Nope still not working.

RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /

RewriteRule ^([a-z0-9-]+)\.html$ index.php?page=$1 [NC]

Using that, I have 4 normal pages to use and none work and goto the x10hosting 404 page.
