Website is not working

For some reason my homepage is not coming up. I have used another web host before and the process was quite simple: upload index.html (not capitalized at all) and all subsequent pages, my stylesheet, and other needed file data. On the other host it started working immediately but not here. Am i to wait before my website begins working or do I need to lump all of my files into an .htaccess folder and some other file that i don't know what it is? I'm perplexed right now.
