I have had a linux system for almost two years now and I havent come across any viruses yet. Nobody has spend $400 bucks for a bare bone computer and purchase an anti-virus program plus a subscription to protect it. It's unreal...

I think linux flavours are the future in terms of personal computing and the protection of information.
Linux is more less used than windows...this is why ppl don't write viruses and trojans for linux but if more people start to using linux then i think that u'll see a lot of viruses for linux too .

@everyone who says that his antivirus slow the pc:

If a security program has the side effect of slowing down the system then i think it's not so good , because it should have only benefical effect....instead this way maybe benefical effects are less than the bad ones.

I use Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 for Windows Vista. It is actually really good at detecting, and neutralizing threads.

For my windows computer, I use a version of Norton Coporate that I get free from work. I certainly don't think its the best, but i'm willing to make some sacrifices for the $0 price tag. I also use ZoneAlarm's firewall program.

For my Ubuntu PC, i haven't really bothered with anti-virus, i just make sure to keep the system up-to-date. For a firewall, I use Guarddog. I tried Lokkit, but it was a little too basic for me; i wanted more control.

As far as what anti-virus I think is the best, I really can't say. I've only ever had Norton and for a while, AVG free edition. From asking around, McAfee gets a pretty high user satisfaction, but I don't know much about its protection quality.

I love avast because of its ability to scan before windows boots up, so if you have a virus that hides from AVs. You can get it with avast. Of course it also doesn't use up as much resources, randomly start disk scanning, and you always can uninstall it easily. Oh and did I mention it's free?

chevvok, did you try using Wine? It's an emulator for Linux which should let you run most Windows executables on Linux. Also, most Unreal Engine games are capable of cross-platforming across OSes (I know that Unreal Tournament '99 was released for Linux and Mac). I have Virtual PC too, I may download a Linux distribution and try it out in there; if I like it, I'll try a tri-boot - Windows 95, Linux AND Windows XP

Back on topic, I agree Norton sucks. Basically you're paying for a paperweight; Norton probably couldn't even detect a virus deleting IT. You're much better off with ZoneAlarm, it monitors everything every program, service etc does and if it might be a problem (e.g. something tries to connect to the internet or start a process), it'll stop the offending executable and ask you what to do with it. Add to that IM/IRC filtering and encryption, and email filters, and you've got a great anti-virus software.

yeah i tried using wine and cedega. neither one of them floats my boat. i mean icoulod get some games working but they ran at bad frames per second and i was using ubuntu at the time...

Before i use AVG 7.5

But now i use ESET(nod32) Smart Security v3.0

I notice that AVG uses more memory space than Eset(nod32)...

AVG does a great job.

I use CA, free from my ISP. It's nice, not hungry, and does what it's told. I can't remember the last time I had a virus, never with CA.

Norton and McAfee unleash lots of little intruders that hide in the shadows and steal all your resources and hide them in secret places. Good luck finding those intruders and their secret places without the help of Capn. Format. :dunno:

I used to use AVG Free but for some reason one day it decided to stop updating itself.

I switched to Avast and have been pretty happy with it. Doesn't seem to adversely affect my computer. 2GB of ram and I hardly notice it's running.

The same thing happened to me with AVG, and I also switched to Avast.

AVG.
I've had it for a couple years or so.
I also use the Windows XP firewall, as well as the firewall on the router.
I also block all cookies, unless I need them to access certain sites.
I think the ad blocker ad-on for Firefox might also help.
I also use ChoiceMail for spam, although the new pop-ups are getting annoying.
