battery life: 2.5 hours linux, 1 hour windows (when i had windows on it)
hated the vista home premium that came on it, i like linux mint much better. i am now microsoft free.

happy? yes, but i really wanted to get a more powerful GPU (preferably an ATI card) and possibly upgrade to a QL-64 or a high powered turion. MOAR POWR!! also want more battery time. will probably spring for the high-cap pack. i can probably get about 3.5 hours on the high cap pack.

Here is the 11 year old laptop I have. It was a hand-me-down from a relative. I'm looking at a new laptop to replace this one as it's slowly failing due to it's age and use now.

Refurbished Dell Inspiron 3800GT
10GB Maxtor HDD.
192MB of 200Mhz RAM (is at 128MB due to the RAM slots failing when two sticks are in)
6-cell battery (Ni-Cd chemistry) that came with the laptop. (battery still is able to retain full charge, however I believe two or three of the cells are shorting each other out faintly, causing a memory issue to take place with the battery, and for it to die in under a week after a full charge without the laptop being on)
I believe a 12" display
ATi Mobility M1 8MB AGP 2x card
Dial-up modem
ESS Maestro sound card w/ Microphone, PC speaker and modem speaker.
802.11g PCMCIA Type I Wireless card.
Linksys EtherFast 10/100 Full Duplex PCMCIA Type I card. (this is as old as the laptop!)
Intel Mobile Pentium III Processor @ 600Mhz, downclockable to 500Mhz with SpeedStep.

To think about it, I have yet to see such a well built laptop to this day. My relative used this laptop heavily for CAD work as well as a lot of Automotion work, as well as some programming and machine control for industrial applications, as well as his primary home PC and travel PC. It's ran while in industrial environments through extremely dusty/dirty conditions in warm environments and STILL works, and doesn't overheat as well. I've only had to replace the CD/DVD drive in it once, as well as the power supply twice (cheap POS builds, hence their failure. The old original Power supply brick burnt up and fried itself after 8 years in service)

Is it ruggedized? and that's cool. Old faithful still does what it was built to do... even after some replacements

Not sure, it works!

At the end of the day, that's what matters right? it gets your work done on the go

I believe a lot of laptops back in the day used to be made like that, where you can beat the things up and they'd still work at the end. The laptops these days are still made to the same standards, but of course, you never know how good their build quality is until it's been around for several years.
