Hi everyone,

I have previously used the free webspace I got with NTL about 10 years ago but the FTP login is becomming so unreliable! Im a complete virgin when it comes to hosted sites so be gentle!

I have registered, signed up and uploaded a website via FTP and the files all appear in home root folder/public_html/upload

The index file is index.html and it is a flash site

My domain is registered wth another provided and I need to redirect it from NTL to x10 but have no idea where to redirect it to. All my previous attempts send me to a dead page.

Can anyone help....please?? I bet this is a really simple question for a guru.

Thanks,
Steve

You need to log into your domain registrar's control panel and change your name servers to ns1.x10hosting.com and ns2.x10hosting.com.

BTW, if you're using the free hosting, a site must be present in~/public_html/ or your account will be suspended for not having a site.

Thanks DOS.

Previously I had them forwarded but I have now changed the DNS settings to the name servers you kindly gave me. Do I need to remove the forwarding address I used before on other webspace and will it automaticall link to my x10 public_html folder just by putting in 2 name servers?

S removing the forwarding address from your domain control panel.

And changing the nameservers will do the point to the x10 hosting server BUT you have to park or add as addon or change the primary domain to work with your account.

Mr Dos.

Would you mind explaining to me which I need to use, parked or addon? I wish to use my account here to host my site, I have redirected it here, and at the moment I have parked it. But just wondered what the addon was all about.

Kind regards,
Oraya

A parked domain will show the exact same site as your main domain. It loads the files from the public_html folder. However, the email accounts are separate from your main domain unless you added the email account as a wild card email.

A addon domain allows you to run a separate site. It loads the files from a folder in the public_html folder that you specify.

Ok great thank you. I knew what parking was, just didn't understand what the addon was. :)

Thank you GS!

Parked? Addon? Im sorry guys, you are far too clever for me!

QUOTE you have to park or add as addon or change the primary domain

Say what now? I have the site in the public_html folder and have no email accounts to worry about. How does the DNS change with my domain registrar get me to my site hosted on x10?

I am with 1and1.co.uk and have 3 domain names that need to direct people to the public_html folder on here. The 1and1 Control panel allows me to:

Destination: Show destination / Edit Destination (Currently blank)
DNS: Show DNS Settings / Edit DNS Settings (Currently set to the ones Mr Dos gave me earlier)
Extras: Domain Parking / Domain Marketplace / Name Appraisal

Could someone tell me what change the park / addon / primary domain bit I need to do next is please.

Thanks again, as a self taught web person I never thought I would end up going into these sort of technical bits.

Select edit DNS settings and set them to
ns1.x10hosting.com
ns2.x10hosting.com

Once done it will take 24 to 48 hours to propagate.

Then it is pointing to our x10 server but to point to your account

You can change the primary domain in account panel

OR

Park the domain in CPanel

The both the above are to point to public_html

to point to any folder under public_html like forum or blog like that then ad as addon domain

For your purpose Change primary OR Park the domain

You have 3 so change the primary with one then park the remaining two.

So that all 3 domains will be pointing to same site.

THANK YOU!!

I have now changed DNS with 1and1
Removed the old forward address (homepage.ntlworld etc)
Parked 3 domains with the x10 control panel with domain root public_html
Uploaded my site directly into the public_html folder
Changed the permissions of all the files in public_html to be 'read' for everyone

I guess I have to wait a while for it to take effect this end? 1and1 says the DNS change is complete but if I go to any of my domains through firefox I get this message:

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access / on this server.
Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Am I right to presume it is just waiting for the changes to catch up?

Sorry to shamelessly bump this thread, does anyone have the final piece of the jigsaw? (see post above)

Thanks as always,
Steve

What is your primary domain name (the one attached to cPanel)?

Rename it. Do not delete it. Unless you know what you are doing.

That is also good option, Rename it to .htaccess_1 or something. Renaming to preserve the copy of .htaccess.

Then try to access your site.

.htaccess can be seen if you enable "hidden files".
  1. Log onto cPanel
  2. Click on ' reset all interface settings ' at bottom of page
  3. Open File Manager
  4. There should be a popup, check "Show Hidden Files' and 'Skip this Question'
  5. If .htaccess is not visible now, it is not there.

And again, What is your primary domain name (the one attached to cPanel)? Do you have a problem with that domain too?

What is your primary domain name (the one attached to cPanel)?

The only mention I have of domains within my control panel is the parked domains (as recommended before):

oddfellowsband.co.uk
oddfellowsbrass.co.uk
unitybrass.co.uk

All have the domain root /public_html

I have changed .htaccess to .htaccess_1 and still getting a 403 error. There must be easier ways than this, if only NTL / Virgin weren't as useless with their own webspace as I am with x10 and all its features...! :rant2:

Hi stevenmarch,

Can you tell us what are the permissions set to the public_html

Is it 755 or something else.

If not then set the permissions to public_html folder to 755
