I was just wondering if any of you thought that computer monitors can actually be too big... I have a 24" monitor that I really enjoy, but for some reason my computer teacher thinks that anything above 19" is too big. I personally love the room for viewing and writing long strings of code and for doing webdesign. It also makes games look sick. I was just wondering what you opinon was.

well what really matters is your personal opinion. And I have a 19 incher and i just can't see some code while i'm doing some which really sucks... and you have to have to consider the highest resolution your Video Card can manage because if you have a big monitor with hd and stuff like that, it won't be cool without a cool resolution right?

nothing is too big, my friend connects his comp to a 42" LCD screen and play his game about 2 metres away on his bed.

A screen is too big when, in the size of room you have put it in, you can't see all of it at once.

I have a nice 20" widescreen one. And its a great step up in resolution and viewing space over the 17" i used to have.

But, if i were to, say, but a 100" screen in the room I have my PC in, that would be WAAY too big. Seeing as how its only an 8' x 8' room. ;)

I have a 15" one, looks crap. Thinking of going for a bigger screen. It's where the fun lies. Full Fledged Gaming.

IMO no screen size is too big as long as your graphics card can handle the resolution needed I would love a 42" Plasma screen hooked up to mine then I might be able to see it ok LOL, I currently have a 17" CRT and want to upgrade to a 20" or bigger LCD in the next 6 months but if my site does well and I earn a load of money I will be going with the 42" LOL  (and a better machine too:lol:)

I think ~22" is the best... bigger is just too much, especially for the price and it also depends a lot on the clarity and resolution of your screen. I know I can display at 1680X1050 on my 15" laptop screen and it shows perfectly.

I used to have a 17" CRT and two 17" TFT's in a triple set up using an ATi Radeon 9200 PCI card and the built in Intel chipset. Suffice to say, it was appallingly slow so I stopped using it!

An example of too big would be a 42" widescreen at 1024x768. Big and blotchy, AND stretched out of perspective... *shudders at the thought*

Anything above 21" is too big for computing. TV's however, anytihng above 42" is too big.

Its not too big as long as your resolution can handle it. I do lots of coding everyday (its my job) and it helps that I can open multiple windows / tabs without it looking cluttered.

I guess for windowed work (GUI not CLI...) it doesn't really matter how big the screen, as the windows don't have to be maximised... Sitting about 2 feet away from the screen while playing games on a 42" TV probably isn't the best idea though.

There are some things on this planet which you cant run into an excess of. For example:
> RAM, can never have enough of it!
> Money, need i say more!
> Screen "largeness" :)
> Hard Disk space

However i think a 32" would be bliss.

I have a 19" wide screen its not amazing but it does me fine im lookin on getting a 24" wide screen before christmas to do my web design, anything bigger than than i think id have to adjust my head to see different parts of the screen lol , i think big screen pose a problem when doing sites though iv many a time designed a full site on my 19" wide (1440 x 900 ) only to see it destroyed on screens like 800x600 and 1024x768 so i thinks its something to be aware of lol

Someone really wise said:
Knowledge doesn't ocupy space
Whilst it may not, the place to read it from does, therefore there is no such thing as big enough, I mean, if you have a ten thousand miles screen, just use as much as you need and leave the rest unocuppied till you need it =P
Ya...hope you can play games in windowed >.<

Nah, I don't think there's a limit to the size of computer screens. I've got a 22" one and it seems fine to me, great to watch movies on.

gotta keep the lowest common denominator in mind when designing  or otherwise use a fluid design that looks fine at 800x600, surprisingly quite a few people still use that resolution.

My ideal monitor would probably be 19" to 21" widescreen
