Which is faster?

The Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz + 2.2GHz(compared)
or
Intel Pentium 4 3.00GHz + 2.99 GHz - 2 CPUs(mine)?

I should choose the duo core. 2 pentium 4's are really slow to play together.
Althrough the pentium 4 has 3.00 ghz the Duo Core is much faster. Oh ye Core 2 was 64 bit right? With a 64 bit OS, you have all ur memory if u have 2 GB Memory or higher, and programs that have 64-bit compatibility work much faster

On the other hand, with 64 bit more memory will be used by programs, since all instructions are 64 bits instead of 32 bits long. (Data types are still the same size though.) And also, you can still use more than 2GB with quite a few 32 bit pcs: as long as your processor supports PAE you should be able to utilise more than 3GB ram, which is the limit for a normal 32 bit processor. (Linux can use up to 64GB Ram with PAE, with Windows you have some antifeaturism, so depending on the version you could be limited to 4GB total).

However the Core 2 Duo will be faster anyway because of it's more efficient architecture, just like a few years back an athlon of certain clock speed would be faster than a pentium with same clock speed. (Which is why Athlons were named things like 3800 with a clock speed of 2Ghz, since it was roughly equivalent to a 3.8Ghz Pentium).

The Core2Duo will beat that Pentium 4 despite the higher clock speed of the Pentium 4. The Core2Duo most likely comes with more L2 cache, more L1 cache, has two cores obviously, and will also support 64-bit and extra extensions/instruction sets. 64-bit does in fact run a tiny bit faster than 32-bit as well.

If you have a Single Pentium 4 CPU, that second core is a hyper threaded core. It gives the impression of a second core and does provide a slight speed boost, but it's not two CPUs. If you really do have dual Pentium 4s though (which means that your box is probably server grade for it's time), the Pentium 4s should beat a single Core2Duo for most tasks.
