they say that ubuntu is very user-friendly... but i tried it out.. didnt like it much. But i like Suse 10 a lot. You should try that out. And you get almost all softwares for it.

I would start with Suse and later after you get used to working things in Linux move to Ubuntu. It's slightly harder to use than Suse but I think it's more stable and uses debian packages which are easy to manage.

If you later feel like getting more advanced go for something like Fedora or Gentoo.

Heh. Well, I ordered the free CDs for Ubuntu, already have Fedora installed ( was told long ago from a I.T. friend that it was good to use ) ... I don't feel like waiting for a download ... any chance I can find Suse on CD or DVD for free shipping?

I like Gentoo because it has reliable documentation, a pretty big user base, customizability, and the only way to have a Linux with the highest level of optimization. (currently)

I started from a Windows user to a Gentoo user right away. It isn't too hard to learn, as long as you have enough patience and a spare computer to help you on the way.

If you don't want to delve into Linux with the trouble of picking components, try a LiveCD/LiveDVD from one of the distributions. The highest quality of LiveCD/LiveDVD that I've come across is Sabayon - formerly known as RR4/RR64.

But... if you like a linux distro that has an interface like Windows, pick something like Lindows.

i use linux debian, yes i know i should update to Ubuntu but i like the style of debian and worked on it for a long time now so i like to stay on it for now. Maybe when i get my linux homeserver setup i might go to a new distro ...... just maybe.

Live CD's are available for almost all Linux distros now, notjust knoopix. Am still using ubuntu on Live CD and would install it on my older PC with extra RAM.

Reading the extensive thread, am getting a bit lost. So Ubuntu for everyone and Fedora for advance users? I thought Advance users use Debian.

Maybe they should start stream lining the many different versions and get more people working on just two or three. In that way, more effort is not wasted in copying, porting over ideas and just "re-inventing the wheel"
