Why is my website down?

Help!

Why is my website down (again)? I have been checking into the forums as required - what gives, and how can I avoid this in future?

It is back up.
It was a server outage so it can't really be avoided.

Thanks so much for your reply, I'm afraid I don't know about all this stuff. (Still figuring how forums work, posting, etc.)
Now my website is back up but I can't get into Wordpress admin - am getting this message after I login :

Warning: getmypid() has been disabled for security reasons in /home/kparois/public_html/wp-includes/class-phpass.php on line 51

Also a bunch of stuff is apparently offline (Apache HTTP, Exim, cPanel and FTP).

Do we just wait, if not what should I be doing? Can you help a (raging) newbie?
