What is your/the ideal computer?
Go deep in to specs if you wish.

I have always thought about this over the years (daydreamed more like). As technology changed so did my dreams .

Anyways, I have kinda lost track of technology over the past few years. Pouring more of my passion in to other things. But still given an unlimited budget, I am sure I could put a machine together that would kick most.

Ok. Here we go:

Enviroment: A room no less than 3m x 3m is needed to house my ideal game/movie machine. Dimming daylight lights. Walls black, except where the projectors shine should be flat perfect white. A mini bar fridge.
Chair: A rig with a set of racing bucket seats mounted on 2x12" subs. Got the picture in my head. Use nice lightweight materials like aluminum, fiber glass and carbon fiber.
Sound: Ideally 7.1 sound. Use 4 mono block amps for the 2 12" subs. The rest running off a B&W 7.1 system. A infrasonic Eminent Tech TRW 17 sub hidden somewhere in the roof and a old game remote with force feedback combined to give those explosions and vibrations some real kick.
Visuals: 3 projectors mounted on the roof. 1 medium sized lcd screen mounted on the rig.
CPU: Core 2 Extreme QX6850 overclocked.
Mother Board: A Lanparty Pro.
RAM: No less than 4gig in dual slots with heat spreaders.
Graphics Cards: 2 Nvidia 8800 GTX.
Hard Drives: 2 Gigabyte i-Ram RAID 0 with 2gig each for OS. Then 1 WD Raptor WD740 for games & programs. 2 Hitachi GST Deskstar 7k1000 for storage of movies and music.
Case: Custom home made job. 2 nice big fans, 1 on the front and one on the back running off external power. Water cooling. Nice and big with a fine mesh in place of panels. No bling lighting, just a single white light with a switch.
Network: Wireless and gigabyte lan.
Printer: HP color laser printer on the network outside of the room.
Other Cards: Video capture card and TV card.
Peripherals & Devices : 2 racing wheels/game pads/joysticks/mice/keyboards & 1 tablet all on hand. DVD/CD writer. Satellite TV decoder. Bluetooth v2. A digital infra red camera.
Power: A nice chunky UPS or 2 with inline surge protection running from 2 different dedicated circuits from the distribution board and its own ground rod and earth bar. Not to sure what power supply/s would surfice for the job.
OS: Windows XP sp2 for the compatability for games and movies.

(placed in Crossfire, cause this could tend towards a bit of a debate. Thought about putting it in Off Topic)

Hard drives: 4x 1TB hard drives in RAID 0+1
Power: 1000watt PSU
Drives: DVD burner (no HD just yet)
Case: Whatever I can find
Cooling: Water cooled
Other cards: TV card
OS: Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit (has to be 64bit with 8GB RAM), also Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 for Windows XP Professional and 98

I plan to build my dream computer ^^ When I dream something, I make it happen.

Environment - Darkness. I hate light, especially sunlight.
Chair - o_O I dun care
Sound - Surround sound speakers. I would like to plant speakers everywhere in my room, but I do not want any annoying LEDs coming from any of them.
Visuals - HD Monitor 2-3 Feet in length, preferrably from Panasonic
CPU - Intel Quad Core Extreme 6850, overclocked, of course ^^
Motherboard - ASUS Striker Extreme LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX
RAM - With 4 slots of RAM in my motherboard, I would like all filled with 2GB chips (requires DDR2, though. It doesn't allow 3)
Graphics - NVIDIA GeForce 8800GTX
Hard Drives - 2x Hitachi Deskstar 1 TB Drives
Case - So far, Antec Black Tower. I would MUCH rather have a black Alienware case, though. That's impossible to get nowadays, though, unless it's a scratched, dead one from ebay. The case I linked to is slightly ugly, but functional.
Water Cooling - I....know nothing about this xD Only that I should get a system. Imma have to ask about that later.
Network - Wireless/Lan, 1 GB
Printer - Printer/Scanner/Fax HP Laser combo
Other cards - Firewire 800 with extra USBs, Creative Extreme Sound, Wireless card (of course)
Peripherals - Wireless gaming mouse with many customizable buttons, Wireless gaming keyboard with many customizable buttons, HP HD Camera (I forgot the name....), 160 GB Ipod
Power - EPower 1200 V Supply
OS - Vista Ultimate (I know how to make everything from XP work on this system already)

=0 This ain't a dream! I'm already savin up for that 1000 dollar processor! Only 975 more dollars to go =P Oh yeah, software...hehehe....lemmee go through my list of downloaded stuff....

Software____ ( I have this already... )

Nero 7 Ultra
Microsoft Office 2007
Abode Master Collection (every adobe program at one, except Encore, which I didn't fix correctly -_-)
3d Max Studio 9
Winrar (duh)
Fantastic Flame Screensaver
Avast! Antivirus Pro
Alcohol 120%
Advanced Task Manager
Regcure
AnyDVD
DVD Shrink
Arty Flash Ripper
Limewire Pro
Getright Pro
Internet Explorer 7
Firefox
VLC Media Player
DFX Audio Enhancer for Windows Media Player
Algorithm decoder programs not to be named here, used for "fixing" apps and games

Games____

Unreal Tournament 2004
F.E.A.R.
Silent Hill 4 - The Room
Condemned - Criminal Origins
Resident Evil 4 - Biohazard
Bioshock
Quake 4
Half Life 2
Half Life 2 Episode 1
Fable
Halo 2
Spiderman III
Hitman - Blood Money
Devil May Cry III Special Edition
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernoble

<.<;;; I don't even play most of those games. I just have them on DVD and installed...perhaps I should uninstall some? xD When I have my 2 TB Hard Drives, I won't mind at all.

I see you went with vista... hmm over a 4gig install.
XP is smaller and faster and boots fully in 12 secs on 2 i-Rams. Why go with some huge clunky hard dirve as a systems disk?

HP Blackbird; end of story. Maybe a Dell H2C, but the Blackbird has a beautiful case with tool-less component swapping!

@deathpie: you and the post before.

The weakest link in machines nowa days is the hard drive. There are 2 ram based drives I know of. the hyperOS and the i-Ram. Both are fast, the i-Ram has a max of 4gig(enough for an os) and the hyperOS max 16gig(only buffered ram). From Toms hardware charts, the 2x i-Ram 2gig RAID0 boots XP in 12 secs(half the time of a WD raptor WD740).

Oh. I go with the huge clunky thing because when it's in the computer and installed, I don't care how much space it takes up xD This motherboard/case combo has been researched completely. I will have enough space for EVERYTHING I plan to get, even with the 3 fans the case comes with, and if everything I get doubles in size. This case is the most space-efficient, best-ventilated case I've ever seen, and the motherboard has everything placed to save space.

And yeah, I chose Vista xD Perhaps I will have a dualboot computer, but I doubt it. I know how to configure Vista to work with everything I have and plan to get already. Just using XP, I believe, is an easy way out.

XP has support for more software at the moment. For a reliable gamming/movie machine realiability is a must.
I wasn't reffering to the physical size of the drive (the i rams fit in a pci slot).
I was reffering to a drive that has high bandwidth over a smaller drive that has insane read and write potential.

By all means you should have a few TB drives, I would have 2. But these should be for storage and not applications and games that need to read and write all the time. Also defragging a monster like that can only take a day or 2 ! I would rather have a min size disk that out performs anything around(i-Ram), that also defrages in no less than an hour.

MY ideal PC?

*Whistles*

Hmm diffused lighting, with remote dimming for movies. (Diffused lighting is best for general computing tasks as it takes the strain off your eyes)

Several Hot Swappable Drives, each at least 500GB - swappable from the comfort of my chair / recliner.

Unlimited Bandwidth, T3 internet connection.

42" Flat panel monitor or several 17" monitors set up like in the shops (1 picture over many).

2 HD-DVD/BluRay/[insert Optical Disks + Rewriter names here] combination drives

2 64-bit quad processors - I know not many programs can take advantage of this functionality yet, but still.. one day they will

Several Bookcases on the back wall for my ever expanding collection of reference books.

Another separate PC set up to be a Linux web-server with cPanel / WHM - same specification as my other one. Connected through a high-speed T3 router (is there such a thing?!)

Colour Laser Printer

Floppy drive (Yes, they DO still have a use)

Several USB and Firewire ports.

Fold-away table attached to my chair so I can use my wireless mouse + keyboard, but put them away when watching a movie.

Floppy drive (Yes, they DO still have a use)

They do? I cant seem to get out the front door nowadays with out the damn things getting corrupted. I'v even got a Omega Zip100(much better than a floppy drive) and that is out dated, yet it holds 100mb nicley and is alot harder to corupt.

I know about a computer that is my dream too. I do not remember the name but its from apple - it has 8 processers, 2gb ram, 2tb hard drive and its amazing. Its a little big but i dont worry about the size. The only thing that puts it off is the price :(.

Funny how few if any one here has the need of a UPS and surge protection. All these dream machines could just go up in a poof of electrons.

No good having a PSU and no protection. When working as a techie, we never installed on a normally line. Only ever dedicated. Voltage between earth and neutral had to be no more than 0.01v. Reason for this is that if you have a compressor or electric motor on the same circuit and it switches off, it drops its excess down the earth. This spike can then travel up the line, to your computer. Usually it stops at the inline fuse within the PSU, but on the odd ocassion it goes to the MBorad. This is not much unlike being hit by lightening(smaller scale).

If I had an unlimited budget, I would pay a research team to design something for me. Something with high redundancy and hot-swappable everything (I can dream) so whenever something newer comes out, I can just take out the old one and put the new one in.
