The societal downfall will not come from a web based program like myspace or facebook, although myspace is worse than facebook. The downfall of society will be from small special interest groups who, in this day and age rule the majority. The media and government do nothing to stop or prevent this type of unraveling, rather they promote it by catering (or trying to cater) to everyone’s needs.

To give an example, in some areas Santa can't say "ho ho ho" because some perceive it as being demeaning to women. Now has to say "ha ha ha." Hell next year Santa wont allowed to be fat because it offends fat people, but the year after he can't be skinny because it offends skinny people. Pretty soon we will have a special interest group of every difference in society and no one will be able to speak with out offending someone and causing a landslide of lawsuits and legislation. That is the type of crap that will ruin society.

i agree that making a website or a blog is more better than face book and myspace
since they kill your time (that can be used to gain knowledge)

Oh my. I just made an even more startling discovery. With things like Myspace and Facebook, I've noticed a lot of the users simply use a computer for that sole purpose.

I've seen numerous people I know get on a computer and do the same thing. Open up IE, type 'myspace.com' or 'facebook.com' and that is it.

I find it rediculous that essentially these kinds of people are not only wasting their time and lives, but they could be so much more productive in the world. This can be compared to so many things. It is like someone who plays WoW all day and nothing else. There is nothing gained from it and in turn with all the wasted time and efforts, you are at a loss. And when you have millions of people affected in this way it becomes a problem in society.

It really is something that has become a terrible addiction just like something such as WoW.

I really just hate the fact that people waste a computer and its resources to log onto myspace or facebook so they can do things like adore themselves and their picutres, complain about things and pull pity for their 'horrible lives', pointlessly interact with random people, post bulletins of rediculous surveys to kill time, etc.

I guess the whole point is that I've not seen a single good thing come from such sites and networks. I guess the only possible good thing Myspace has is the band myspaces. Nice way for the millions of random bands to get their music out there with little effort.

Is social networking the new EverCrack? From reading this and talking to other folks via phone and e-mail it seems that is the way they are headed.

What happened to going to the park(without wi-fi access point).

Technology will not ever replace the simplicity of embracing a woman during a slow dance...

It's mainly MySpace, but it's the internet overall is what is destroying society. It's really messed a lot of people up lately. Movies have nothing to do with it, nor does music, as they're both just music and movies, no matter what kind of genre of song it is/type of movie.

Just an update to my Yuwie post, total earnings as of 15 Dec (I ran it for a month to see) was (drum roll please) ................. £0.04p damn thats a fine program for us all to earn money LOL. Adsense or pretty much ANY other program including paid emails is better than that LOL.

Myspace is my vote.

I used it for a while, and it just FEELS like you are going to get killed using it.

It is so badly designed too. I know it is "customizable" but there is a reason professional sites have a consistent design. It makes it easier to read.

Also, using facebook, I only talk to the people I know in real life. I have never had the urge to go and Find someone I don't know.

This is an interesting topic, I agree that it applies to the internet at large and beyond (also thought I'd mention SecondLife and this video about Facebook), a lot of it is full of distractions and most people seem to have a lack of attention and allow themselves to be drawn into these unproductive habits. Social networks aren't contributing a great deal to the the net IMO, certainly over-inflating it's ego and rudeness! Then there is the erosion of privacy and everyone pretending they are a celebrity. It is like we are living out our lives by proxy? Maybe we are all bored, apathetic, autonomous consumers? So many people sleepwalk through life. I feel that as a society we have conditioned ourselves to need an "instant fix" for something... food, TV, games.. etc. I guess the boredom stems from a lack of depth/meaning to someones life, always looking for someone/something else to provide a source of something. It is a real problem, but I'm sure there will be even greater social change in the coming decades given the onset of all the issues facing the world today.

I'm gonna switch off my computer and read a book :)

First I would like to show you all how blind human-kind is. The quote above is a prime example of pure ignorance. Social network is just a marketing phrase for a place where users discuss things openly. Maybe you all have forgotten the most popular of all "social networks," the world. If what this guy is saying is true, if the largest social network of all (the world) isn't contributing to the internet, then why is there an internet?

now that that is taken care of... Neither Myspace nor Facebook, nor even SeconLife is destroying society. Myspace and Facebook are web sites, and as far as I know, web sites don't just start doing things on their own without input, they just sit there because all a website is, is a pretty interface for information transfer. The only things destroying the internet are people who post meaningless things like, "My cat jus1 walked 0n my k3yboard LOLROFL." You might say, "yeah God, but we are talking about the network of the sites destroying society, not the site itself." A decent statement that I would refute by saying, "Hey puny little man/woman/snack, guess what those networks are made of. People! And again, what parent network do all people belong to? That's right, the world." Also, as far as the issue of kidnappings, stalkers, and internet pedophiles go; there wouldn't be any problems if people didn't moronically post pictures of themselves, phone numbers, email addresses, etc. For example, this forum shouldn't have any problems with things like that because hopefully there aren't stupid people to do such things like posting addresses or phone numbers

No it is my opinion, something which you were obviously ignorant to graciously accept. I am simply gesturing that people all to often use social networking sites to big up their ego and behave in ways which they wouldn't do offline in order to win friends/respect.

Social network is just a marketing phrase for a place where users discuss things openly.

It means different things to different people in different context. The platform/paradigm for social networking has changed as the internet has evolved.

Maybe you all have forgotten the most popular of all "social networks," the world. If what this guy is saying is true, if the largest social network of all (the world) isn't contributing to the internet, then why is there an internet?

You are putting words into my mouth and besides which who said that what I say is true? who says what you say is true? The only thing that is true is that we have two separate opinions. As with politics, the people get the Internet they deserve.

now that that is taken care of... Neither Myspace nor Facebook, nor even SeconLife is destroying society.

Maybe not, but they have an impact on social behaviour and interactions.

Myspace and Facebook are web sites, and as far as I know, web sites don't just start doing things on their own without input, they just sit there because all a website is, is a pretty interface for information transfer.

Not all sites do, and can you honestly say you know what happens to all the data you enter into forms?

The only things destroying the internet are people who post meaningless things like, "My cat jus1 walked 0n my k3yboard LOLROFL." You might say, "yeah God, but we are talking about the network of the sites destroying society, not the site itself." A decent statement that I would refute by saying, "Hey puny little man/woman/snack, guess what those networks are made of. People!

By that logic you could say that drugs are not destroying society because they are made by people.

I did graciously accept your opinion, then I told you it is a bad opinion. As for the latter of these statements, thank you for beefing up my argument.

It means different things to different people in different context. The platform/paradigm for social networking has changed as the internet has evolved.

I might have thought that to have been true if I were just a normal sap, but with the magic of dissecting phrases we can see the following words (these definitions came straight from the dictionary):

a)Social (adj.) - relating to human society and its members;

b)Network (n.) - an interconnected system of things or people;

the only reason you think the meaning has changed is because it is so often associated with websites like Myspace that we forget the real meaning sometimes. It happens. An example is "PC." most people now associate this acronym with microsoft, but in reality it is just a personal computer. Even a calculator is a PC.

You are putting words into my mouth and besides which who said that what I say is true? who says what you say is true? The only thing that is true is that we have two separate opinions. As with politics, the people get the Internet they deserve.

Now you are just backing away from the whole argument. Also, I did not put words in your mouth. I simply quoted the words you put in your mouth. you said, " Social networks aren't contributing a great deal to the the net IMO." the clause "social networks" is generalized therefore saying that social networks in general aren't contributing to the net. you can fix this with eight easy keystrokes, by adding the word internet to the beginning. Then I would have agreed with you.

Maybe not, but they have an impact on social behaviour and interactions.

once again, this is caused by people. unless you are two years old, you choose to let it influence you. I myself let myself influence myself.

Not all sites do, and can you honestly say you know what happens to all the data you enter into forms?

Yes I know what happens to data when gets entered to the form. Let me walk you through the processes at work.

1. I enter the the stuff I want to enter (Input)
2. I press submit (user input again)
3. the code in the program that processes this info parses the data (the code in the program is written by people and tells the website to do things to the data).
4. the now parsed data now gets sent (by means of a predetermined command) from the human created program/web site to a server which holds the data for a set period of time until it is called upon for use.

so you see, everything happens as a result from human commands. your computer clock isn't autonomous. it is given a set of commands that it follows. sometimes it syncs up with a server, but even that command is written by a human.

By that logic you could say that drugs are not destroying society because they are made by people.

very good. that actually is true and thank you for supporting my argument again. drugs don't ruin society or take lives by themselves. humans have to take the drug (this is the equivalent to a comp. command), and the drug simply follows through. and why does the harmful drug exist? because humans make them.

this is going to be fun!

I think I'm proving my point already...

I did graciously accept your opinion, then I told you it is a bad opinion. As for the latter of these statements, thank you for beefing up my argument.

It is a bad opinion in your opinion... we are going around in circles here...

I might have thought that to have been true if I were just a normal sap, but with the magic of dissecting phrases we can see the following words (these definitions came straight from the dictionary):

a)Social (adj.) - relating to human society and its members;

b)Network (n.) - an interconnected system of things or people;

Putting two words together doesn't get you a definition...

War = an active struggle between 2 entities
Saw = a hand tool used for cutting

the only reason you think the meaning has changed is because it is so often associated with websites like Myspace that we forget the real meaning sometimes. It happens. An example is "PC." most people now associate this acronym with microsoft, but in reality it is just a personal computer. Even a calculator is a PC.

It's meaning depends on it's usage. If you said the word wireless 70 years ago people would think you were talking about the radio. If you said it today most people would assume you were talking about 802.11 networks.

Now you are just backing away from the whole argument.

I believe it was you who led us down this path initially was it not?

Also, I did not put words in your mouth. I simply quoted the words you put in your mouth. you said, " Social networks aren't contributing a great deal to the the net IMO." the clause "social networks" is generalized therefore saying that social networks in general aren't contributing to the net. you can fix this with eight easy keystrokes, by adding the word internet to the beginning. Then I would have agreed with you.

For the sake of your own wanton rigidity I agree

once again, this is caused by people. unless you are two years old, you choose to let it influence you. I myself let myself influence myself.

Maybe not everyone has your ungodly sense of self-pride

Yes I know what happens to data when gets entered to the form. Let me walk you through the processes at work.

1. I enter the the stuff I want to enter (Input)
2. I press submit (user input again)
3. the code in the program that processes this info parses the data (the code in the program is written by people and tells the website to do things to the data).

so you see, everything happens as a result from human commands. your computer clock isn't autonomous. it is given a set of commands that it follows. sometimes it syncs up with a server, but even that command is written by a human.

I think you've missed the point.

very good. that actually is true and thank you for supporting my argument again. drugs don't ruin society or take lives by themselves. humans have to take the drug (this is the equivalent to a comp. command), and the drug simply follows through. and why does the harmful drug exist? because humans make them.

I'm glad we agree on something, but really I think this has taken the topic on a discourse from the original discussion. I have nothing more to say on this or to you, thanks all the same but I prefer to discuss and not to argue.

I dislike them both to be honest. Although I have accounts on them both.

On my myspace profile, i've actually set my age to something like 87. And occasionally rant about things. Haven't done so in a while, perhaps I should, and also change my facebook account into a satire at the same time.

Myspace is just overburdened with, well, idiots. Horrible themes on pages, horrendously long pages, terrible navigation, no spam-kicking methods... ugh! I haven't yet found a decent profile on there.

Facebook is so jumped up on "security methods" and "approvals" its just a pain in the ass to use. The site design killeth mein eyes, I get friend requests from people I don't know, who aren't even in my country, and its filled with useless applications for "poking" and giving people silly superlatives - apparently I was voted "most likely to corrupt the minds of the young" by one of my supposed friends!

Other sites I could name that are similarly rubbish:
Bebo
Again, random people adding me... Terrible, bloated, overly-long pages. And whats worse, it thinks its better than Myspace. It is, but its still filled with jerks yelling "check out my profile!!"

Youtube
Probably worse than facebook, but not as much as myspace. What can i say? Filled with jerks, crap videos, IP theives, and people wanting me to subscribe to them. Pompus arseholes.

And I just hit F12 accidentally again. SUCK!

I'll be honest. I haven't read everything in the last few post. I'm a bit lazy but really I just don't feel like reading a lot of stuff right now. Maybe later when I'm in a different mood.

You know, you can say things such as myspace and facebook are just sites and have no negative impact, but that it would be the people who use it and how they use it that creates negative effects on society. But everyone keep in mind, if I were to create a bomb that could destroy the world once detonated, in the logic above, there is no wrong. Now two weeks later the world is destroyed by my bomb because someone detonated it. Of course the individual who detonated the bomb would be at fault. But you must understand the creator must take some blame as creating such a device that could and more than likely would have devastating and negative effects on the world is something that should be avoided.

Don't go quote crazy on me and create the stereotypical response that makes your opinion seem right. You know anyone can post their opinion in a way that makes them seem right. People could argue terrorism or murdur and with the right wording, proper use of quotes and phrases could make it look like the right thing.

Let us go back to basics. It is very well known that when there is temptation for some evil, man can not help but give in. You can argue all you want but it is something that history has made very clear. So since this is an opinion thread, I will say that in my opinion when people create things that can easily create temptation and result in negative effects on the overall state of man, there is something wrong there. YES, there are millions of things out there that do just that. But you can always start a new thread on those then. I simply think that in the cases of myspace and facebook, the overall effect on mankind is less of a positive one as it is a negative one.

You would need a pretty good case to prove that these 'services' are helping more than they are hurting. The internet itself isn't all good as we know. But the connection with the world plays a great role in helping mankind. Myspace and facebook are not centered around ideas that are beneficial to mankind.

Take it all as you want, quote me and tell me I'm wrong. But of course no single human can prove either side, they can only argue and try to sway others. This is an opinion thread with people's opinions. There is no fact or exact truth for the whole situation. It is like whether or not chocolate taste good. There is no fact for that. Either a person thinks it taste good or they don't. it is all an opinion. there is a reason for each person liking or disliking it and evidence to support their opinion, but it is still an opinion.
