x10Hosting all the way, I tried there trial like about 4 yrs ago and wasn't happy with it! Good thing I decided not to pay for hosting with them!

I've used 1and1 for nearly 4 years on their cheapest web host package. Never had any problems - very fast, no downtime. I contacted them twice in that time - once to swap to Linux hosting and once to enquire about adding other websites to the same account. Got very quick email responses to both questions. Never phoned them - never needed to.
As far as x10 is concerned - I've used AwardSpace as a free host. No problems but only one mysql database and no mail server (only webmail) so you can't use mail() in php. x10 is the best free hosting package I am aware of although I'm still new so don't know how reliable it is going to be...

Two notes:
1) X10 paid or free, both are just as good - paid's essentially free but on a different server so it's not really subject to having a users untested php script cripple the server for an hour
2) Anyone notice that this topic got brought back up from 10-10-2007?

I've also used Awardspace, zendurl and freehyperspace. None of them compare with x10hosting, none of them have cpanel, they all use their own dodgy account panels, which are extremely limited.

I've tried the ones Verbsite mentioned, and a couple others to boot. Nothing seems to compare to x10, although I'm new here, I really like it so far.

Yes, the uptime here is extraordinary for a free host, I am aware of more than a few paid ones that can't match it and don't even feel the need to try. At big places like Hostgator, for example, I'd venture a guess that they care very little about the individual customer with a shared hosting account: business is business.
Also, it's worth pointing out that the community is much more interesting here than you'd probably find on a paid host. When people pay money, they do so in order not to have to think about posting in forums, etc... and they are missing all the fun of interacting with other people. The fact that you can get things like logos designed and free domains just from posting a bit is quite unique as well.

I agree with you ThePaintGuru, the free support here, is like some other company's paid support, which in my opinion is a little sad. x10 hosting is one of the top hosting company's, in my opinion, for support and other various things.
