PHP is your best bet. I picked up Perl in a day after PHP as they just seem so 'similar'. Javascript is important for user interface, particularly XMLHTTP.

You could always just store a reference to the files in the database instead of the files themselves, which would be kept in an external folder. That might speed up query times.

That is one of the problems with Macs (although it never bothers me), there is a much smaller range of games. Your best choice would be to look through some of these. You probably can get them much cheaper elsewhere though.
