I like the new design. I love Google's clean and simple website especially the home page.
There was a Javascript way to access a prototype of the design back in November. The final design seems to be similar except they removed the blue buttons.

Since free accounts have a 3 subdomain limit, I don't think wildcard DNS is possible, hence the reason why * is not valid. See: http://x10hosting.com/forums/free-hosting/115897-please-enable-wildcard-subdomains.html#post658687

Try going to cPanel --> MySQL databases. Drop the user from the database and add it back giving all permissions. Also make sure your config file has localhost as the MySQL host.
Go to cPanel --> MX Entry
Choose Remote Mail Exchanger.
Enter ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM (Destination) with a priority of 0.
