503 Backend fetch failed when updating phpbb3

Hi. I'm trying to update my phpbb3 from 3.0.12 to 3.1 and everytime I get to updating the database, it take about a few minutes to try to do so, then stops and shows me this error.

Error 503 Backend fetch failed
Backend fetch failed

Have you tried performing a manual upgrade to the database?

I have a feeling this is being caused by the script not executing in a small enough amount of time to not timeout the backend server--however I am unable to replicate this behavior on a test installation of PHPbb3.

I'm not sure exactly what you're doing, but you're maxing out your CPU time, as well as your I/O time on the server, which could also be causing these problems:

By manual upgrade do you mean going into phpmyadmin and editing values there? Cause that would take weeks for me to do, perhaps even months on the one here since it is SO slow.
