That would be because you are trying to use an unregistered domain.
If you want to use a custom domain instead of the free ones (subdomains) we offer during sign-up, you would actually need to register (purchase) the domain first and configure it for use with our service at the registrar.
This would be true for all types of hosting services, though with paid plans there sometimes is registry of a domain included in the price.
