ASP pronunciation

I have been having a long debate with someone I know about how to pronounce ASP.

I say it is asp (all one word) and he says it is A.S.P (three words)

Which one is it?

I would say A S P, as an acronym with separate letters. Just like P H P.

However it doesn't seem very important.

I would say A.S.P because it is an abbreviation of Active Server Page.

Would you say html (one word) or H.T.M.L (4 letters)? php or P.H.P?
I would say them all as letters not one word.

But do you say N A S A or NASA?

I think that acronyms should be pronounced all one word if possible, because you can't say HTML in one word.

Well I figure if it's a pronounceable abbreviation, then I think it's fine.

You could say ASP or ASP-dot-NET despite how weird it may seem

ASP doesn't sound right as one word, so I say A.S.P myself, same as PHP. NASA is different, it just sounds right. Crap explanation I know, but it's just what I think.

Its an acronym, as everyone else said, so it's most definitely A.S.P.

I agree with the above users I would pronounce it A.S.P because it does not should right as asp if it should ok as one world then I think you should pronounce it as one word if it doesn’t then don't.

I think it depends on what sounds best as well as what the people who made the acronym had in mind. I have personally never heard anyone pronounce ASP as one word. To me, it actually sounds derogatory when said like that(maybe I should start using it then ). A-S-P, however, sounds more professional.

PHP could be pronounced as "fip", but that just sounds awkward. Conversly, SQL is sometimes pronounced as Sequel, which doesn't sound bad at all. I personally prefer S-Q-L, though, since that's the ANSI standard and I like it more.

And the first two letters of ASP when pronounced together do not sound "pleasant". To me it sounds like aspe which can be taken many ways, especially when broken in 2 parts and the s and p sounds are emphasized.

I say it as one word too. Don't know why...For me it sounds right because there is a swedish word that is the same

By the rules of english, it is A.S.P. But, who follows every rule of english? Anyway, a language can, and is constantly changed by how the majority of people use it (like ain't was added to the dictionary) and the majority write ASP, so at the same time ASP is also correct. As a matter of taste, I like to write ASP because it is much easier.

Because it's really up to them. Like my name is Macrae but the traditional way is MacRae (I think) and it doesn't mean I have to change my name. A lot of people spell it wrong though.
