New to this, just signed up with x10 for web hosting. How do I associate a registered domain from another provider? Thanks in advance.

Hi brysonte,

Please see our wiki article at http://x10hosting.com/wiki/Domain
In short, you need to add the nameservers ns1.x10hosting.com and ns2.x10hosting.com, and then add it in your cPanel as a parked or addon domain.

Thank you,

Leading off of what Dead-i said, you need to do a couple things here. First though, make sure you have the following access to everything...
  • Your account in which you registered your domain (GoDaddy, 1&1, etc.)
  • Your x10 account
  • x10 nameservers: ns1.x10hosting.com and ns2.x10hosting.com
That's really all you need. Now to a decision. Are you wanting to add an addon domain or a parked domain?
What's the difference? I'm glad you asked. You know how when you go to your x10 domain right now it goes to the public_html folder? That's what a parked domain will point to. When you go to site.com that is a parked domain on site.x10.mx it will be equal. So think about it like site.com = site.x10.mx get it? Addon domain is a little different. It just points to a directory on your server. So let's say you wanted multiple sites and your normal x10 site. So let's say you have site.x10.mx, site.com, site1.com, site2.com. You have 4 websites, okay? When you create an addon domain, it just creates a directory for it to point to. So...
site.x10.mx = public_html
site.com = site.x10.mx/sitecom
site1.com = site.x10.mx/site1com
site2.com = site.x10.mx/site2com
Get it? Ask if you need any more explaining.

I will go through step by step instructions on how to do this (I will explain some more stuff later with why you change some settings).
  1. Go to the site where you registered your domain (GoDaddy, 1&1, etc.(
  2. Go to your domains
  3. Make sure you select or choose whichever domain you want to have on x10.
  4. Go into the domain and find edit or edit dns settings. If you need help on this, I will help you.
  5. Change it from the default nameservers to custom nameservers (if you need to)
  6. Change the nameservers there to x10, which were provided at the top
  7. Go to your x10 account
  8. Park the domain or add it on
It should be good now! If it doesn't and gives you an error. Please screenshot and post it so we can help you further. Most cases it's because the DNS hasn't switched yet, because it takes up to 48 hours sometimes.

Why do I have to change the DNS settings?
Well, I'll answer that question through images! :D
When your domain is set up, the company you bought it through had it at their nameservers. So for simplicity sake we'll use site.com and host.com.
Excuse the bad handwriting. I don't have a tablet, so I used my mouse and this is my first time doing it like this.

So can you kinda see what the purpose of this is?
A user accesses your site and sees what's on it. For your domain to know what to display, it has to make contact with your server. So all your domain is, is a middle man. More or less.
So. To have ability to access the server via the domain it must have the correct nameservers.

Any questions?
