Notepad on Windows is the best. The best sites always come from Notepad :p

While I have been using Windows Notepad, sometimes it gets annoying when I can't remember what I've named a certain function and then I have to open up a bunch of files and search through them to see where it was defined...

All the poll selections are commercial / non-free options. I prefer open source (both because I'm poor and because I like the ideology).

Aren't there any good open source / free PHP editors out there? And no, I don't mean another plain 'ol text editor (like vim, or emacs, or such). Autocompletion is what I need.

I've been using EnginSite PHP, but thats me. Got it via the college, so I'm rather biased that it's pay-to-own software I paid $1 for as part of a student discount thing :)

Not exactly attached to it though, could use something else if I find something I like better.

I Prefer DreamWeaver, But if you are experienced enough on coding no need to use a software, just notepad ;)

PHP Designer is my weapon of choice, but I'm thinking of coding my own at some stage ;)

I use Notepad ++ the most, but if I am working with an intensive script I use PHP Designer

UltraEdit or even better UEStudio is the only editor you will ever need for just about anything. I have also found that UltraCompare is an incredible if not the best compare tool. Then there is TopStyle for stylesheet editing. And last, but not least, is CSE HTML Validator, a professional HTML validator program that was possibly written by someone in the future. All these are extremely reasonably priced shareware, with the possible exception of CSE HTML Validator, which is a professional validator. However, all the products are professional in services and reliability. UltraEdit and UEStudio can be mega-configured for use with any programming language, along with the inclusion or ability to include any number of helper tools, like PHP integration, Ruby, Javascript and other useful validation, compilation and so forth kinds of tools. TopStyle is just downright fun and it validates CSS.

I always and only use notepad++ for my PHP codes. I have a php debugger called XDebug that can be hooked up in the zend extensions (replace zend optimizer) but I don't really use it. There is also some PHP IDE I read somewhere, but I have forgotten what that name is. It was 100+MB. If you want CSS or HTML (SGML) validation then there's no better than www.w3.org itself.
