Hey y'all.

I'm trying to change from my current installation of ubuntu-desktop 9.10 to ubuntu server 9.10... but I'm not sure the best way to do this. I've seen people booting into recovery mode and then using apt-get autoremove ubuntu-desktop, then installing ubuntu-server over it... but I'm not sure if this is the best option.

I don't have that much on the partition, and I was wondering whether you think it'd be worth it just to get what I need, put it on a floppy, and repartition, and installing ubuntu-server from CD.

I'd love your two cents before I make a decision.

I'm honestly leaning towards the "dump it and start fresh" side of the argument.

Thanks,
Neil Hanlon

correct me if i'm wrong, but i think the only difference between desktop and server edition is the existence of the gui. so i would think that removing gnome(et al.) equals server edition.

Fairly certain that's wrong, but then again, I've never removed the GUI to know.

In ubuntu-desktop, things in init.d are processed on login. In the server edition, their started as soon as the machine is booted.

I'm not sure if that has to do with the GUI or what... but I just need to have the server edition, basically.

Eeeeeaaaasy.

Copy /home to something.

Install ubuntu server.

Copy /home back, without the gnome files.

Bit crude, but it'll work.

That's what I was thinkin... But iLl pick and choose what I want. I really only need public_HTML... Plus I need some of the data for the AC server. :p

need more input on this. Should I backup, wipe, and reinstall? Or attempt a removal of ubuntu-desktop (gnome and all it's packages)

i don't know anything about the differences of ubuntu-desktop / ubuntu-server, but i would suggest a fresh install

it just takes a few minutes and you get rid of any useless stuff - back up your personal data and verify it before :)

Judging by your posts it seems like your new to Linux. I strongly recommend you either install a LAMP stack on your existing Ubuntu installation or install ubuntu-server over ubuntu-desktop. Only run the following commands if you feel comfortable working in a CLI.

If you want to find out more about the LAMP stack option just ask about it.

Anyway just run this command IF YOU ARE USING UBUNTU 9.10
The following will remove GNOME (your GUI)
Code:
sudo apt-get remove aisleriot alacarte app-install-data-partner apport-gtk aptdaemon at-spi binfmt-support brasero brltty-x11 capplets-data checkbox checkbox-gtk cli-common compiz compiz-core Once you've run that you can install whatever packages you want for your server. If you want LAMP you might want to run something similar to the following:
Code:
sudo apt-get install mysql-server mysql-client apache2 php4 libapache2-mod-php php5-mysql

No, I'm not new to Linux..

I think I'll just uninstall and re-install..

Thanks for the input everyone.

Okay here is what I have learned,
First, the major difference between the desktop edition and server edition is just the way it is installed and the GUI on the desktop. All you would have to do is the following command:
sudo apt-get autoremove ubuntu-desktop
This will get rid of the desktop interface.
Then all you will have to do is install the necessary components for your system that you want, the basic being the LAMP package.
sudo apt-get install lamp
This will give you what you essentially get with the ubuntu-server 9.10 install.

Now if you are looking for just the easy way to do it, back up what you need and do a fresh install. I hope this helps
