Maker sure that before any RewriteRule you have the line

RewriteBase /

If the .htaccess is in subdirectory /foo , then it would be

RewriteBase /foo/

I cant edit the .htaccess file, i've selected the file manager to auto open and not show hidden files.
How do I select it to show hidden files without ticking the box when you click 'file manager', because i've set it to go straight to the file manager when i click it.

At the bottom of cPanels front page you have the option to reset the interface, which would allow you to chose to open the dot files again.

Log onto cPanel,

bottom of page

click on

reset all interface settings

Now go to File Manager. You will get the pop-up again and you can check 'show hidden (dot) files' along with 'don't show this again'
