Letapk hit the nail square on the head saying that ultimately the life expantancy of XP is going to be dertimed by the availability of compatible hardware. It's a pattern that's been seen before with NASA who since 1990 have been quietly stockpiling all the ancient 8086 processor chips they can lay thier hands on (amongst other stuff) in order to keep the shuttles flying.

That is indeed a very interesting fact. They were really using 8086 based on-board computers?
There are only two more shuttle missions planned this year.
What are they planning to do with the collection of chips now that the shuttle missions are nearing completion and the fleet about to be retired?

Sincerely,

As I recall most were intended for Earthside test equipment and diagnostics, they are after all still launching rockets that are essentially built to a forty year old design. If it aint broke don't fix it so the saying goes.

Unfortunately for XP it was being asked to launch bigger and bigger packages that demandad more of the application be run inside the RAM such as graphics/ video editing and of course games this is where the death bell first tolled. Regardless of how much RAM the motherboard would accept, XP could only address around 2Gig. Even now only Win7(64bit) can cope with larger RAM capacities.

2GB ?

It should be 4GB(2^32).

PAE doesn't help either here!

I think when Windows comes out with Windows 8-10, they will have enough new features to make XP a free OS available for download via their site with restrictions and for a small price, may upgrade with more features?
It seems like a lot of programs are doing things like that nowadays. I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft or Macintosh come out with an OS that's similar.

it will definently phase out eventualy
i would go to windows 7 pro or ultimate because they have xp mode built in and is compatable with most windows xp programs even without xp mode.

Very interesting! Also XP Pro is my favourite OS but Im going to switch to windows 7 some time in future because newer technology may not be able to run XP.
