are you using a proxy?
if you are inside some organisational network or smthing...this might be the case....
if that is so....check your proxy settings in Firefox by going here

Tools>Options>Advanced>Network>Settings
(on windows)

and
Edit>Preferences>Advanced>Network>Settings
(on linux)

or else u cn ask ur netwokr admin bout it...........

if this is not the case...then there maybe ur firewall blocking IE or sm spyware or smthing.....

Well, consider this. Firefox itself is not in beta stage, and since IE8 is still in public beta, not fully released yet, they may be still ironing out some bugs with things such as DNS resolution and such which you may have come across, but if anything, be noteful on how long it takes for IE to display an error. Typically 30 seconds means that it was able to make a connection but for some reason it's timed out or what not, almost instantly is no connection, 2-3 seconds is typically DNS/site refused connection error and such. Spyware and such would be more likely to bring up ads and such and do clickjacking than to disable a browser, but it can happen. if ESET's online scanner says your computer is clean, and it's not the network connection settings (don't use auto detect unless you're having big problems, and make sure proxy settings are not checked), it's probably a problem with IE8 and something.
