Hello,

I've been searching around and have been wondering if it is possible to run a small IRC (Internet Relay Chat) network with an unpaid account. This would require 2 background processes and the ability to run programs. I know this is possible with shell access, but searching through some forum posts, it looks like I am unable to get shell access with a free account.

I've also searched around, and see that I can get the exec() PHP statement with v3 PHP (advanced).

Before I apply for Advanced PHP, I would like to check with the following:

I think this can accomplish running a program on a server once activated, correct - one that would not end until stopped? And if this is not the case, then would I be able to run the IRC with any other way, with an unpaid account?

Thank you for your help.

Free accounts can not run services or daemons.

How does the exec() work for a free account? Does it use foreground processes or another method to run a program, rather than daemons? I think I could use that as well, if that is the case.

Let me stop you there. You will not be allowed to run a IRC server from our free servers. The free hosting packages are for websites.
