FTP uploads dont appear in browser

When I upload files through FTP I cant access them in the browser, it says 404 error.

When I delete a file in FTP I can still access it in the browser :0

My files seem to be uploaded to a new folder which is called the same name as my FTP username
When I login (with 2 seperate FTP programs) I cant navigate out of that folder

Have you tried simply logging in to FTP with your cPanel username & password? This gives you access to your whole home directory
